Why Toggle Switch?
The toggle switch is a popular choice for electrical circuits, thanks to its user-friendly design. Simply push the operating lever up and down or left and right to turn the circuit on or off. The toggle switch is even designed for ease of use while wearing gloves, allowing for convenient control.2 Position On Off Toggle Switch (SPST)
A single-pole, single-throw (SPST) toggle switch is the simplest type of switch. It provides basic on/off control of a single circuit, using two terminals to create or break the electrical connection. Activating the switch connects the terminals, completing the circuit; deactivating it disconnects them, opening the circuit. The light switch in your room is likely an SPST switch: in the "off" position, the circuit is broken, turning the light off; in the "on" position, the circuit is completed, turning the light on.Wiring of Toggle Switch - 2 Position On Off version
3 Position On Off On Toggle Switch (SPDT)
A single-pole, double-throw (SPDT) toggle switch has three terminals: one input and two outputs. It operates in an "ON/ON" configuration, meaning the input is always connected to one of the two outputs. In the "ON-1" position, the input connects to the first output, completing circuit one. In the "ON-2" position, the input connects to the second output, completing circuit two. Only one circuit can be active at a time, hence the "single-pole" designation. Some SPDT switches offer a third, "OFF" position, resulting in an "ON/OFF/ON" configuration where neither circuit is complete.Wiring of Toggle Switch - 3 Position On Off On version:
Latching vs Momentary
The latching switches features a design that changes position when activated, with the lever staying in that position until you manually return it.Momentary switches activate only while pressed, returning to their default state upon release, unlike latching switches. Their brief activation makes them ideal for applications like doorbells and keyboards.
You can select the most appropriate option based on your application needs.
